Spring Companion:  various barks, a scarred red maple branch, broom corn, paper. sweet birch pegs 52"l x 32'w x 7'd Sold

I have always been fascinated by the mummy/cocoon form and exploring what bark will and will not allow me to manipulate to my will.  The radiating broom corn aura is exactly that, the energy field of this emerging creation.

Sentinels: tulip poplar bark, maple pegs, 67"h x 20"w x 17"d   $3000

Bark after it is removed from the tree wants to return to it's original form.  Sliced once length wise to get it off the tree, the bark starts on a curving in on itself, both edges curling inward.  I take this natural progression and use it to my advantage, starting with the larger bark and working my way upward to the sky.

Winter Companion:  various barks, sweet birch, brass brads, 43"l x 8"w x 8"d,  $1200

In my loneliness last winter I created "companions" in the quiet studio.  They helped me through a difficult time.  I have avoided making anthropomorphic figures, thinking somehow I needed to not be so ego cnetric, but this act of creation was soothing, comforting, intriguing.

Red Bud: Red bud branch and bark, 28"h x 15"w x 6"d, $800

I was deep in the woods at a logging site and spotted this poor red bud tree half smushed by the logging machine....so I sat in the forest and cut off this branch, peeled part of the bark off like a bananna, cut off the peeled part's branch, thus making it light enough to get out of the woods.  then I wove it back together while watching over my mother who had just broken her wrist.  both made whole again.

Trunk I:  white pine and tulip poplar bark, phragmites seed plumes  $1000

Sometimes I intrude my ego too far on the perfection of nature, sometimes I add just enough of the human, and still honor the original maker.

Sentinel:  apple, fire wood, clay, 27"h x 13"w x 11"d   $700

When those two "legs" showed up in my studio firewood pile after we pruned the orchard, I had my beginning.  Further exploration in the house firewood pile revealed the apple wood base.  Upper figure is made of cloth dipped in wet clay, formed and fired.  A sentinel to open doors, come empty handed and trusting.
